5 One Tank Trips for North Floridians

5 One Tank Trips for North FloridiansReady to get away this summer and explore some new territory? Want to take the kids for a trip but not quite up for cross country? Visiting Florida is about more than great beaches. It's chock full of treasures from natural wonders, to great shopping. If you are looking for a little inspiration on where to go and how to save, I've got some "One Tank Trips" lined up for you that will have you thinking there is still some adventure left for the taking this summer. Want to go by the numbers? Try this helpful website to get your Travel Math spot on.

1. Daytona: 1.5 hours away

A view from the top down at the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse

I recently traveled to Daytona with my family for a quick mini Babymoon. Before this trip I had regarded Daytona and it's beaches as more of a spring break destination reserved for NASCAR and Bike Week fans. I was surprised at the well preserved history and culture I discovered in the region. The highlight for my family was the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and neighboring Marine Science Center. The Lighthouse which you can still climb today is the second largest in the nation and is designated a National Historic Landmark. You'll enjoy chatting up the Lighthouse Keeper (historical reenactment)  and touring the three historic homes previously inhabited by the families of the official keepers. A stone's throw away you'll discover the Marine Science Center, an educational outlet for the  entire family and a working hospital for sea turtles. It's all about hands on at this destination where the entire family is welcome to pet stingrays and sharks in the touch tanks along with sea urchins, and sea slugs.

2. Clearwater/ St. Petersburg: 4 hrs

The Vinoy Renaissance Resort & Golf Club

Winter the dolphin at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium

Clearwater and St. Petersburg welcome families big and small to enjoy the historic and marine treasures that await. Stay at The Vinoy Renaissance Resort & Golf Club where their "Navigators" will pack you a lunch and set the details in motion for an active day in St. Pete at the Great Explorations Children's Museum or the 100 year old Sunken Gardens.

Ever seen the movie Dolphin Tale? Meet Winter, the famous star of the first and second movies, who resides at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. You'll also discover other marine life such as turtles, otters, and stingrays.

If you are looking for a place to stay beachside, head to TradeWinds Island Grand Resort for family fun in the sun. Enjoy the Pirate Show, floating water park, giant inflated slide on the beach, bungee trampoline, and jetpacks on the water! Still not sure what to do? I love this list of 201 Things to do on your Fl Vacation.

5. Tallahassee: 3 Hours

Celebrate the "Great Southern Summer" in Tallahassee. I recently returned from a short visit to Tallahassee and fell in love with it's charm and natural beauty. If you haven't gotten to know Florida's Capital City, this is the perfect opportunity to get acquainted. Featuring more than 600 miles of trails, Tallahassee has some of the best biking, hiking, running, paddling, and equestrian paths in the Southeast. Other outdoor adventures include Tallahassee Museum's Tree to Tree Adventures zip line and obstacle course (including a course just for children), over 60 award winning parks, and a jungle cruise boat tour down Wakulla Springs. If that's not enough inspiration, check out these 31 attractions under $10
