True or False : Insider Access to 7 Dirty Little Travel Secrets

Amy West on airplane

Always looking for the edge when it comes to travel I recently happened upon a blog covering 21 secrets of travel. Curious how many of these little tips, tricks, and hacks were true I sought out my friend Rhoda, a flight attendant for Delta, to find out just how true the story was. Here are the facts on seven of these dirty little travel secrets.

1. Bribing the Flight Attendants Will Earn You Freebies
False: I'm sure the flight attendants would appreciate the special treat but tipping and lavish gifts won't necessarily earn you anything special. Didn't your momma ever teach you to give without expecting anything in return?

2. Germs - Planes are Full of Them
True: Stay away from those blankets and pillows. Also avoid drinking tea and coffee, those water holding tanks they use to make your hot drinks are full of grime.

3. Your Pilot is Sleeping Most of the Time
False: Maybe they could (thanks to autopilot), but that doesn't necessarily mean they would. There is accountability.

4.The Use of Cell Phones Will Interfere With the Plane's Electronics
False: The FCC claims the use of cell phones interferes with cell towers. However each year we see those restrictions lighten... time will tell just how light they will end up.

5. If a Plane is Hijacked the Pilot will Leave the Wing Flaps Up During Landing
False: Our source couldn't give details due to security reasons but confirmed that this is false. Thankfully I'm sure the airline folks have worked out some other genius security protocals in the event of a crisis of this nature.

6. You Can Unlock the Lavatory From the Outside
True: In most cases. However this may depend on aircraft.

7. Lights Dim Upon Landing in Case of Emergency Evacuation
True: This ensures that cabin crew and passengers eyes are already adjusted in case of an emergency evacuation.

How many did you guess right? Do you have any other travel secrets you'd like to reveal or myths you'd like to bust? I'd love to read your comments below!

Until then...

The Importance of the Mommy/Daughter Date | Featuring Anthropologie

Some say going from one child to two is like going from one to five. Others swear having more than one is easier because they entertain themselves. Personally, I've found the truth lies somewhere in between. Getting used to being a mom of two means learning to juggle the schedule of a kindergartener (they don't make Kindergarten like they used to folks), nailing down napping schedules and developmental milestones, and still fitting in time to think intelligent thoughts and bring fresh content to this blog. It's easy to find yourself getting married to the routine and overlooking the necessity and beauty of spontaneity. I'm talking about long walks holding hands just because, board games, giggles, dress up, and baking cookies. With everything my kids are blessed to have I was surprised by what my daughter asked for this year as a birthday gift...

Amy West and daughter in looks by Anthropologie and Kids Gap
I remember at Christmas time watching this Ikea video. The point of the video is that parents were surprised that when their children were asked what gift they wanted from their parents, they almost always answered that they wanted to spend time with them. I found myself getting dewey eyed thinking how true it was, but also secretly doubting my child would have the same response. Cue my shock and awe when she answered that what she really wanted this year for her 6th birthday was to spend more time with me.

Going from only child to big sister had her missing the one on one time we used to have in ample supply. Taking that answer to heart, we've begun scheduling regular Mommy/Daughter dates. Sometimes we see a movie, sometimes we get brunch, sometimes we go to starbucks and get a hot chocolate then walk around Target talking about things we like. Whether we are going to the park, or visiting the farmers market, the destination isn't so important as what's happening between the lines.

The message that's being sent is the key here. I'm allowing my actions to speak loudest when I listen to her concerns, comfort her anxiety, and help her find the answers to her big life questions. She may only be six, but these moments will have a ripple effect throughout her entire life.

Amy West and daughter in looks by Anthropologie and Kids Gap

Time is our most valuable resource. I spend loads of time investing into my kiddo, but these little moments of heart to heart time are really the most valuable to her. And if what she wants most in life is to spend more time with me, there is no way I'm going to let her down.
Amy West and daughter in looks by Anthropologie and Kids Gap

The message here is not that I'm a perfect parent. Because I MESS UP EVERY DAY. Seriously I suck at it, a lot. But who is perfect? We aren't and neither are our children. What I am trying to say is that I can give her the one thing I ask her to give. I can give MY BEST.

Amy West and daughter in looks by Anthropologie and Kids Gap

It's up to us as parents to live by example. That means I need to listen to her when she tells me she misses me and needs time together (even when she says that after we've spent hours doing her homework, going to dance, and visiting the library). It means I try to respond with a kind answer after the hundredth time she has asked me the same question in the middle of unloading the dishwasher, making dinner, and listening to her little sister scream. Because when I show grace and empathy, that's the model she goes by when she sees her friends are down, or when she is annoyed with the obnoxious kid at school.

Amy West and daughter in looks by Anthropologie and Kids Gap

Parenting is a lot of sowing seed, and waiting for that fruit to show. I don't know the moment my kind words will return. Sometimes I'm surprised to hear my own words, when my tears finally fall, and that little hand holds mine and says it's gonna be alright.
Amy West and daughter in looks by Anthropologie and Kids Gap

Sometimes we have to focus on the kodak moments. We will forget the battle field moments when they are grown. We will look back and wish it hadn't gone so fast. What we'll have left are those kodak moments. I don't know about you, but I want a bunch of those filling up my memory.

Amy West and daughter in looks by Anthropologie and Kids Gap

Personally I'm sick of blog posts that make parents feel like crap. That's not what this post is about. My hope is that other parents feel encouraged that it's not about perfection, or what we need to buy for our kids, get them involved in, or how we perform for them. What they really want is just us. To be with us, in the midst of our imperfection. I think that is a simple thing that we sometimes over think.

Whether it's a Mommy/Daughter date, a family game night, or another family tradition, there is no better investment of our time than in those little lives that are depending on us for love, security, and safety. We may not have a lot of time, but as the saying goes, we make time for what's important to us.

What are your favorite traditions? Share in the comments below!

Until then....

Enjoy the Journey!

10 Things Only Work From Home Moms Can Understand

10 Things Only Work At Home Moms Can Understand

1. The struggle of trying to return emails with an infant on your lap.

2. The dread that fills your soul when someone asks if you can hop on a phone call with them. (Cue screaming child in the background)

via GIPHY

3. Getting dressed for an in person meeting and hating everything because it doesn't fit like pajamas or active wear, but when you do find something that works and you get ready to go you feel friggen fabulous!

via GIPHY

via GIPHY

4. Your kids always know when you have a meeting or work event because this is the only time you ever do your hair or makeup. Oh and by the way, they need to back up with their fruit roll up sticky hands.

via GIPHY

5. Your work space motto is "anywhere the kid isn't". This includes the bathroom.

via GIPHY
6. When someone asks what you do for a living you immediately think "Clean house", then remember "Oh yeah I also do ____".

via GIPHY

7. Your work day has no strict boundaries. It's more of a fluid object that bends and curves based on school pick up lines, and nap times.

via GIPHY
8. You have to keep a ""to do list and a "have done" list otherwise you will finish every day feeling like you really accomplished nothing.

via GIPHY

9. When you tell people you are a work from home mom they look at you like you are from another planet. "So wait, you stay at home with your kid, and you work?" People immediately assume you either live in a pig sty, spend no time with your kids, or that your work isn't real.

via GIPHY

10. When people do realize how your life works they think you have the easiest job ever. When it comes down to it, it may not be the easiest but you certainly wouldn't change it for the world. You love achieving your career goals, and being with your kids. It may be messy, but it's spectacularly beautiful.

How I Lost the Baby Weight | Featuring OOTD from Anthropologie

Amy West and daughters in Anthropologie

I'm five months into the new adventure of being a mommy to baby London. Words can barely convey what a true joy the last few months have been. My first experience was (like many parents) a trial by fire. This time, there is a sense of confidence having tread similar ground before, and over all I've been much more relaxed for the whole process. This goes for bouncing back as well. I'd love to give you a five point formula for how I lost the baby weight but the truth is that it has been a lot less straight forward than all that. Instead of striving, this time it's all kind of taken care of itself. Here's my take on losing the baby weight the second time around....

Amy West and her daughters featuring Anthropologie clothes

1. Start With a Good Foundation
I can't deny that starting with the right foundation was paramount to a healthy pregnancy and recovery. Before I was even pregnant with baby London, I was in close to the best shape of my life. This came from working out with a trainer at least twice a week and staying active with zumba classes, juicing, and chasing around my little busy bee Sienna. As a result, by eating in moderation (this included my fair share of cupcakes) while pregnant, I was able to stay within healthy limits of weight gain. Compared to my first pregnancy where I gained 47 lbs, I only gained 30 lbs this time. That was certainly a better place to start.

2. Eat All the Things
I'd like to return to the concept of eating in moderation at this point. I believe in it. However, when you first begin breastfeeding, you never expect to get the appetite of a trucker. So in the first few months after having London, I pretty much did "eat all the things". But this was completely normal because my body was healing itself and having to get use to supplying enough milk for my new rapidly growing baby. I guess what I'm saying here is that what's most important is for baby to be nourished, and mom not to stress, the natural order of things will come to pass if you listen to your body and make good choices. This is not a time to diet.

3. Mindfulness
Mindfulness is such a buzzword right now but honestly, this has been a valuable lesson for me in this season. I'm a planner, a dreamer, and I'm usually setting goals and ambitiously pursuing them. It's easy to feel a little lost when you go from sixty to zero in a day. I chose to make this season about bonding with my baby, not conquering the world. I will cherish these intimate moments forever. Soon, my baby will be a toddler and she'll be running around getting into everything. This time around, I've chosen to discard guilt and focus on the ones that that really matter, my family. My #goals will have their moment in the sun again. For now, I'll be staring at my angel while she sleeps in my arms because that's where she belongs. An amazing thing happens when you slow down for a minute and embrace the moment, you start listening to your heart and your body, and you make choices based on what you know is right, not based on the fear of missing out.

4. Do It Together
Usually working out is "my time" , but this first year of my daughters life leaves "me time" in short supply. I still need to work out for my mental health, but also because I do want to get back into the shape I was in before. In order to do that, I've made it a group effort. I weight train in my home during baby's naps, or when I walk the big kid to the park. I do zumba like before, and now I also do yoga with the help of my favorite new youtube instructor. The point is, sometimes we have to embrace the "new normal", apply a little bit of creativity, and have fun!

Amy West and daughters stay fit and healthy together

baby tennis shoes

Because of these simple steps, I am pleased to say I was able to return back to pre baby weight by the time London was five months old, that's half the time that it took before. The point here though, is that the amount of time doesn't really matter. What matters is that baby and mom are happy and healthy. I would encourage every new mom out there to relax, stop being so hard on yourself, and know that in time things will get back to the "new normal". A good friend of mine put it pretty perfect. "Saying you want to go back to your pre baby body is like saying you want to go back to your pre pubescent body. It is ludicrous." It's true, as women our bodies will change with age, and with children. The best we can do is make healthy choices, and stop trying to live up to some engineered ideal of what we are supposed to look like. Be healthy, and be happy. Let the social expectations fall away and listen to your heart. You'll find your way.

Until then...

Enjoy the Journey!
