12 Holiday Traditions to Share with Your Family

We all have our Holiday traditions. You know, those never fail "To Dos" we check off our list between Thanksgiving and New Years Eve. As a young family we are still determining what our traditions will be. A mix of my family favs, his family favs, and our own individual family favorites. Here's a round up of our current never fail traditions we have checked off the list the last few years. *Spoiler Alert. There are no elves involved.

1. Christmas Card Photos
We established our own photography business in 2006. Family photos were one of our main sources of business so it was important for us to have great photos to showcase our work. Because our holiday season was always full of photo shoots, we got our family photos in early. Even though our photo business has dissolved due to the popularity of this blog, that tradition still stands today. We shoot early in October or before in order to get ahead of the rush. So don't be surprised to get our photos right after Halloween.

2. Gingerbread Reveal at 
One Ocean Resort and Spa  
Several of the resorts in our region create stunning Gingerbread creations. The luxurious One Ocean Resort is right in our backyard, and always hosts a festive reveal of their epic Gingerbread creation each year. For the last three or four years we have made it a point to be at the One Ocean Resort Gingerbread reveal to partake in the Christmas Carols, cider, and of course the Gingerbread Cookies. We've seen the elves at play on the beach, Santa relaxing in his room, and a giant gingerbread bakery. Who knows what we'll discover next year?

3. Jammy Ride

The jammy ride was established in my household when I was a kid. It goes like this. 
1. Dress up in your jammies
2. Hop in the car
3. Go enjoy the Christmas lights 

There are several great places to discover lights in my area, but wherever you are, I guarantee you'll find them much more enjoyable in your p.j.s.

 4. Gingerbread House/ and Candy Making
I'm not exactly sure how this became important. I think I was just desperate one Christmas season to entertain my energetic toddler so I grabbed at a gingerbread kit at Publix and boom, instant tradition. Now every year the Publix gingerbread kit is a necessity for our Christmas season. I really enjoy seeing how creative my big kid has become in decking out her house. London is still in the "eating the house" phase, so we'll see how creative she can be maybe next year. In addition to making our yearly gingerbread house, we have an annual baking day my mom and I established years ago that to this day holds true. Buckeyes (an Ohio classic consisting of peanut butter balls dipped in chocolate), and Chex Caramel Corn top the list of items we bake and give away. 



 5. The 12 Days of Christmas Bedtime Singing


One year we got this "12 Days of Christmas Book" when Sienna was like 3, as a gift. Every year after that, singing the classic carol has become a Christmas eason "must have" for us. We start at the beginning of December and sing it literallyyyyy everryyyyy night. At first you are kinda sloppy and can't remember the words, but by the end of the month we are masters and can sing it forward, backward, and in and Operatic voice! Take a listen and watch for yourself. Even London got into it this year.

6. Christmas Movies and Books 
We have collected a nice array of Christmas books throughout the years. "The Night Before Christmas" is a must of course, "The Christmas Story" about the Nativity is for sure in there, and this retro book about Rudolph from my childhood also found it's way into our list. Books and movies definitely help create a spirit of magic during our season and can't be missed.

7. Bedtime Christmas Dance Party 
One of our newer ways to get our fill of Christmas music is the bedtime Christmas Dance Party. We are big into bedtime dance parties at this house. Add a Star Shower Motion light projector and some Christmas music into the mix and you have an instant disco! This a tradition I have a feeling will be returning year after year.

 8. Pause and Reflect 
It can be challenging to do, but it's so important. Taking a moment to pause in the middle of the Holiday Season and reflect on all our gratitude, and the magic of it all is for us, an absolute priority. This year we were so grateful to get away to The Horse Stamp Inn where we were able to unplug for a little bit and just let the kids be kids. It was priceless!

9. Give Back 
I'm so grateful that both side of our family established in us the importance of giving back during the Holiday Season. We are so grateful that all our needs are met. In our gratitude we know that it's important to give to those less fortunate. Some of our favorite ways are to:

1. Adopt a family to get presents for
3. Purchase gifts through Rethreaded, one of our favorite non profits.

By purposefully giving through one of these venues we try to expose and educate our children to give back.

10. Enjoy the Romance 
Christmas and New Years are two of the most romantic holidays to look forward to. The candlelight, the magic, the warm fuzzy feelings. It can be challenging to find the time to embrace that magic amidst the hustle and bustle of seasonal events and Christmas shopping. For us that time finally comes on Christmas Eve when the kids scurry off to bed. Mom and Dad stock up the presents, then we sit down to a romantic dinner just for two and make the most of the candle light.

11. Party 
For me the highlights of the season are all the fun get togethers and parties that are taking place before year end. Whether its a Holiday Open House, a preschool music special, or a corporate office party, I just think it's fun to get all dolled up and mingle with friends and family. This year we even have a masquerade to attend. We'll be ringing in the New Year in style!

12. Go to the Beach
For Floridians, it's a welcome tradition to seek out the sand on Christmas day. No, we may not be wearing our bikinis, but we'll soak up the sunshine just the same on December 25th. Sometimes we get a cold front and you'll see us decked out in our puffy jackets, but more likely than not the weather will take a turn for the warmer side and may just hit 80 degrees. I'm not going to lie. I don't hate it:)

3 Reasons Quality Time at Home is a Must Have | Featuring Anthropologie

The past six months have been a little slower than my usual. Well... let's define slower. Slower when it comes to jet setting around the world, being in the social limelight, and exploring new luxurious destinations. However, if you define having a baby, getting a kindergartener adjusted to big kid school, buying and moving into a house, and continuing my work on this blog and in the media as slow well... you are probably way out of my league when it comes to busy. It's true my definition of busy has been redefined yet again. It won't be long though, before I pick up my travel pace. In fact, we are headed out to Texas this month to discover all the treasures Houston has in store. I look forward to bringing you the best of Houston, until then I'm embracing these last few refreshing days of spring with my little ones. Here are three reasons I love being home.

1. Routine is the Rhythm of Life
Don't get me wrong. I have come to crave the unknown. I appreciate the beauty of spontaneity, and I love seeking out adventure. However, I find my world begin to shift wildly out of control when there are no boundaries, or rhythm to get into when it comes to every day life. Living out of a suit case can be romantic, but it's not a sustainable way of life. Everyone needs a home base, whether it's a tiny flat, or a 3 story townhouse. Quality time at home allows the space I need to establish the norm, the baseline, or standard I compare the rest of my life to. There is a comfort in routine, and a feeling of security. This is especially important for children. This routine, if established correctly is useful when traveling, but it will never have the coziness it possesses at home.

2. Head in the Clouds, Feet on the Ground
Traveling can feel like a fantasy. Life seems to be full of color, everything is new, and someone cleans your room every day! By nature I'm a dreamer, and when I'm traveling those dreams come alive. When I'm at home things are more humble. I've learned to see the beauty in those humble moments. Without the contrast of these two worlds, it gets easy to take them for granted. The balance of each of these worlds instead makes me a more well rounded individual, living in the moment whether I'm the one being waited on, or doing the cleaning and care taking for my family. It's the embodiment of one of my favorite scriptures. 

"I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want." ~ Philippians 4:12

3. Refresh and Refocus
Sometimes I get restless. I wonder what I'm really accomplishing, or I feel I've completed the challenge I set out to conquer and I crave a new obstacle to overcome. Sometimes, though... it's time to be quiet. Take a break, and quiet my mind. It is in these moments that creativity does it's best work. You can't force an "Aha" moment. You have to be listening. When I'm home and connected to the simple rhythm of life, I hear that little voice that is so easily missed during the times I'm in "the zone" and busy with all my personal goals. This is also the time I take stock of my relationships, and reconnect, repair, and rebuild any that need maintenance. Because, relationships are everything.

There truly is "No place like home", but I do agree that home is where your heart is, and there are infinite pictures of what that image looks like to different people. What does home mean to you? The Importance of the Mommy/Daughter Date | Featuring Anthropologie




Some say going from one child to two is like going from one to five. Others swear having more than one is easier because they entertain themselves. Personally, I've found the truth lies somewhere in between. Getting used to being a mom of two means learning to juggle the schedule of a kindergartener (they don't make Kindergarten like they used to folks), nailing down napping schedules and developmental milestones, and still fitting in time to think intelligent thoughts and bring fresh content to this blog. It's easy to find yourself getting married to the routine and overlooking the necessity and beauty of spontaneity. I'm talking about long walks holding hands just because, board games, giggles, dress up, and baking cookies. With everything my kids are blessed to have I was surprised by what my daughter asked for this year as a birthday gift...

I remember at Christmas time watching this Ikea video. The point of the video is that parents were surprised that when their children were asked what gift they wanted from their parents, they almost always answered that they wanted to spend time with them. I found myself getting dewey eyed thinking how true it was, but also secretly doubting my child would have the same response. Cue my shock and awe when she answered that what she really wanted this year for her 6th birthday was to spend more time with me.

Going from only child to big sister had her missing the one on one time we used to have in ample supply. Taking that answer to heart, we've begun scheduling regular Mommy/Daughter dates. Sometimes we see a movie, sometimes we get brunch, sometimes we go to starbucks and get a hot chocolate then walk around Target talking about things we like. Whether we are going to the park, or visiting the farmers market, the destination isn't so important as what's happening between the lines.

The message that's being sent is the key here. I'm allowing my actions to speak loudest when I listen to her concerns, comfort her anxiety, and help her find the answers to her big life questions. She may only be six, but these moments will have a ripple effect throughout her entire life.

Time is our most valuable resource. I spend loads of time investing into my kiddo, but these little moments of heart to heart time are really the most valuable to her. And if what she wants most in life is to spend more time with me, there is no way I'm going to let her down.

The message here is not that I'm a perfect parent. Because I MESS UP EVERY DAY. Seriously I suck at it, a lot. But who is perfect? We aren't and neither are our children. What I am trying to say is that I can give her the one thing I ask her to give. I can give MY BEST.

It's up to us as parents to live by example. That means I need to listen to her when she tells me she misses me and needs time together (even when she says that after we've spent hours doing her homework, going to dance, and visiting the library). It means I try to respond with a kind answer after the hundredth time she has asked me the same question in the middle of unloading the dishwasher, making dinner, and listening to her little sister scream. Because when I show grace and empathy, that's the model she goes by when she sees her friends are down, or when she is annoyed with the obnoxious kid at school.

Parenting is a lot of sowing seed, and waiting for that fruit to show. I don't know the moment my kind words will return. Sometimes I'm surprised to hear my own words, when my tears finally fall, and that little hand holds mine and says it's gonna be alright.

Sometimes we have to focus on the kodak moments. We will forget the battle field moments when they are grown. We will look back and wish it hadn't gone so fast. What we'll have left are those kodak moments. I don't know about you, but I want a bunch of those filling up my memory.

Personally I'm sick of blog posts that make parents feel like crap. That's not what this post is about. My hope is that other parents feel encouraged that it's not about perfection, or what we need to buy for our kids, get them involved in, or how we perform for them. What they really want is just us. To be with us, in the midst of our imperfection. I think that is a simple thing that we sometimes over think. 

Whether it's a Mommy/Daughter date, a family game night, or another family tradition, there is no better investment of our time than in those little lives that are depending on us for love, security, and safety. We may not have a lot of time, but as the saying goes, we make time for what's important to us.

1. The struggle of trying to return emails with an infant on your lap.

3. Getting dressed for an in person meeting and hating everything because it doesn't fit like pajamas or active wear, but when you do find something that works and you get ready to go you feel friggen fabulous!

4. Your kids always know when you have a meeting or work event because this is the only time you ever do your hair or makeup. Oh and by the way, they need to back up with their fruit roll up sticky hands.

9. When you tell people you are a work from home mom they look at you like you are from another planet. "So wait, you stay at home with your kid, and you work?" People immediately assume you either live in a pig sty, spend no time with your kids, or that your work isn't real.

10. When people do realize how your life works they think you have the easiest job ever. When it comes down to it, it may not be the easiest but you certainly wouldn't change it for the world. You love achieving your career goals, and being with your kids. It may be messy, but it's spectacularly beautiful.
