Tampa Top 10 | Family Travel

Family Travel in Tampa Bay

Ever since our visit to the Epicurean a few years back, Tampa Bay has remained at the top of our list of favorite cities to visit. Besides the fact that it's a one tank trip for us, Tampa is bursting with things to do for the whole family. Our last trip was more of a romantic couples weekend, so this time we decided to unlock Tampa Bay's treasure trove of family destinations. Here is our West Family Top 10.

How we all feel when we visit a new hotel.

A family destination in and of itself, the Marriott Waterside is ideally located down town right across from the sportsplex. Just around the corner from the Port, you have easy access to the Cruise terminal, Tampa Bay's stunning museums, and the popular River Walk. We stayed on the dedicated Wellness Suite floor, which was perfect for the family. Our suite included light therapy you could set for the time of day or mood you were in, and aromatherapy which eased the anxiety and wildness our little ones sometimes get when visiting a new place. We enjoyed the lobby bar, room service, the Waterside Grill, and the hotel's stunning pool deck and fitness center. The children were endlessly doted upon by the staff and enjoyed daily gifts including stuffed animals, and coloring books. It was clear the Marriott Waterside is a destination that goes above and beyond to make every guest feel special big and small.

Tip: I highly recommend the Wellness Suites for help with keeping the family relaxed.

Although it might not be your first guess for a family friendly destination, we couldn't wait to try out Oxford Exchange. We had heard many great things about the place but still our expectations were blown away. Housed in what used to be the old stables of the Tampa Bay Hotel, Oxford Exchange is an inspiration for young and old. Designed to be a place where great food, conversation, and learning converge, it's sense of place is distinct. Enjoy brunch in the atrium, browse through the charming shop and book store, or grab a cup of artisan tea or coffee. If you have small children this might be a quick breeze through for a cup of coffee to go, however older kids will have plenty to take in as each room houses new treasures.

Tip: Make reservations well in advance, especially if you plan on having brunch on the weekend.

In preparation for my upcoming round up on the best Aquariums to visit, we naturally had to visit the Florida Aquarium. I had passed the Aquarium a few times in the past leaving the Tampa port next door after a few of our most recent Cruises. I wish we had stopped in sooner! The Florida Aquarium is a "must visit" full of fun. Our favorite exhibits were the Wetland Trail which wove it's way throughout a lush atrium, the Coral Reef gallery, and all the touch tanks. We arrived just in time to participate in an exciting game show for the kids and enjoyed an up close look as the Aquarium's divers interacted with sharks, turtles, and exotic fish. The Aquarium also offers Dolphin cruises, and (if you are a certified diver) you can pay to dive with the sharks!

Tip: In the hot months come prepared for the kiddos to get wet on the Aquarium's splash pad.

Housed in Tampa's historic water works building, this restaurant and brewery is an impressive experience for every age. Ulele, named after a Native American Princess, serves up cuisine inspired by Florida's original inhabitants. Fresh organic fare cooked over an open flame gives each dish a distinctive flavor and essence. The building underwent massive restoration and has quite the history. Ask your server the story and enjoy a journey through time. We had to get a close up of the large Barbacoa grill where dishes were prepared openly for guests to view. Our 6 year old loved the creative kids menu and special gift of colorful plastic wires to create characters with instead of the typical crayons. We couldn't get enough of our dishes including Okra fries and Alligator Hush Puppies for starters. Bonus! Water works park is next door with a large splash pad for an after dinner cool off for the kids.

Tip: The building itself is a piece of art. Take a look at this video documenting it's restoration.

Since David and I have been married, we have journeyed to Zoos everywhere from New Zealand to Houston. We had heard from many insiders in the Zoo world, that Tampa was a top destination. Let me tell you, we were not disappointed. The Lowry Park Zoo is housed on 60 plus acres, and is home to thousands of different species. Upon entry we were greeted with a bright cheerful courtyard where colorful parrots were released to a timely and dramatic display of feathers and flight. The path lead us through jungle habitats full of primates and tigers. In the center of it all stood a large carousel the entire family took a ride on at no additional cost. Particularly impressive was the children's area (Wallaroo Station) which housed a small roller coaster, petting zoo, splash pad, and more. Of all the zoos we have been too, I enjoyed spotting new species I had yet to see in person. Worth a special visit was the Manatee Hospital, where experts work to aid in the rehabilitation of these gentle sea cows. We were mesmerized by their gracefulness as we watched them from the underwater viewing area. There was so much to see we couldn't fit it all in in the short time we had. Definitely make a full day out of Lowry Park Zoo when you visit with the family.

Tip: No outside food is aloud in the zoo. Come prepared to dine in or grab a picnic table outside the zoo.

For those looking for adventure and larger than life thrills, Busch Gardens is the destination for you. Busch Gardens has fun for all ages and combines the experience of a zoo and an amusement park together. Concerned for little kids too young to ride roller coasters? Don't be, Busch Gardens has eight kid friendly rides, meanwhile Sesame Street Safari of Fun is packed with plenty of toddler friendly attractions and playgrounds meant for kids big and small. Teenage and grownup thrill seekers will get a rush out of close to a dozen rides meant to challenge even the bravest of park goers. Relax and take in a show, nosh on some tasty treats, or meander through the animal exhibits. One thing is for sure, you wont be bored at Busch Gardens.

Tip: Watch the weather. Rides will close if lightning is nearby. This is a great time to see the shows or grab a bite!

Always on the look out for  authentic Southern comfort food, our travels to Tampa led us directly to Fodder & Shine.  Praised for it's backwoods "Cracker" inspired fare. Fodder & Shine celebrates the old Florida pioneers who were made up of a medley of immigrants. This eclectic combination led to a cuisine all it's own, and today Fodder & Shine gives it new life. Updated and classic cocktails don the menu and seasonal specialties are pulled together from their scratch kitchen including classics like Pimento Cheese, Mac N Cheese, and their own hand crafted version of Frito Pie. Kids love it, parents love it, it's a win win.

Tip: Reserve a table near the back and watch the kitchen at work through a large window. Also, bring some change for the arcade games.

Along with Aquariums we have also become collectors of Children's Museum experiences. After enjoying our visit to the Children's Museum of Houston, we had to visit Tampa's as well. There is so much fun to be had! Two stories of non stop fun for big and small alike make this destination a winner! On the first floor kids enjoy an indoor water works area where they can splash and play. Story time happens through out the day on this floor and young ones enjoy climbing forts in the shape of boats. Once you make it to the second story however, things get much more active. Sienna took on the challenge of climbing the giant pringles as we like to call them. They had a fun version of these in Houston as well. After that there is room after room of dedicated fun for different age groups. Kids can learn all the ins and outs of constructing a house from electrical work to masonry. Gardening, grocery shopping, running a restaurant, becoming a vet! These are all dedicated rooms kids can explore and awaken their imagination in. I particularly enjoyed the fact that my toddler and first grader didn't have to be separated. There was age appropriate activities for both of them on each floor.

Tip: To fight the passing of germs there is a special bag at the entrance of each activity for toys the kiddos may put in their mouths, or you can always give them to one of the staff for cleaning.

Conveniently located next to Glazer Children's Museum, inside the Tampa Museum of Art, Sono Cafe was a surprising little eatery that left a memorable mark on our visit. Sono serves up local ingredients with a fresh modern take on classic cafe food. Gourmet Grilled Cheese, Fresh Salads, and Soups join Avocado Toast and Hummus in an elegant line up. Enjoy an expertly curated wine list that wouldn't be complete without a stunning charcuterie board. As one of the stops along the popular River Walk, Sono Cafe makes an excellent lunch or brunch break with a gorgeous view out it's wall to wall windows, and a shaded deck overlooking the River Walk.

The Tampa Riverwalk has done a brilliant job of opening up the waterfront area to more pedestrian traffic. This is a great draw for local businesses, a terrific place to see the Tampa skyline while enjoying some fresh air, and yes you can stroll along with your adult beverage (in the approved cup). Just on this blog alone, five of the destinations mentioned are in fact accessible by the River Walk and one more is very near by. That's not including many many more attractions and parks open to the public along the Riverwalk. Enjoy restaurants, festivities, and culture all within the 2.4 mile loop and see some of the best Tampa has to offer.

Tip: Enjoy this virtual tour with Tampa Moms Blog.

I could easily turn this into a Tampa Top 20! There is so much to see and do in this ever changing city. If you want to get it all in, consider purchasing Tampa's City Pass. We used City Pass in Houston too and it's a real money saver. It covers several of the attractions listed here including Busch Gardens, the Lowry Park Zoo, and The Florida Aquarium.

Until then...

Enjoy the Journey!

Endless Summer with Sunuva UV Swimwear & Beachwear

This fall our hometown Jacksonville Beach is still picking up the pieces leftover from Hurricane Matthew. Our beaches were battered. Our dunes were obliterated, many of our beach accesses were closed, a good portion of our pier destroyed and there is still much debris where there was once pristine sand. However, in the spirit of rebuilding and celebrating our nearly year 'round beach weather, we teamed up with Sunuva UV Swimwear and Beachwear and brought the girls out for a fashionable post rejoicing in Florida's endless summer.

Kids UV Swimwear and Beachwear

This luxurious children's line is not just fashionable, it's also functional. Feel confident when your kids are frolicking on the beach, that they are getting complete sun protection even beyond your sunscreen application. Swimsuits have built in 50+ protection from harmful UV rays. That's a worthwhile investment with a completely adorable silver lining if you ask me!

I love Sunuva's selection of adorable prints. They are colorful, bright and playful while still being subtle and chic. They offer designs for boy and girls as well as siblings, so you can have fun matching them up! Sienna loved her trendy Boho dress and both girls enjoyed the extremely soft fabrics. Sunuva also has a great line of accessories including hats, scarfs, bags, and shoes.

The Best Work Outs to Follow | At Home and Beyond

My favorite work outs at home and beyond
I haven't written a good work out post since my 30 Day Challenge, Juice Cleanse, and Fitness Trends series. After covering "How I lost the Baby Weight", I thought it was time to share again what I'm working out to lately. For me, being active has to be fun. I know what my body likes, and I know that I mentally need to work out as an outlet for stress. Over the last year I've had to get creative with my fitness since my little wasn't old enough to go into child care at the gym. Here is the result of my search for best online work outs, and what I'm doing lately.

Amy West in athleta gear

First of all I just want to point out that I am not a beach body coach and am in no way affiliated with them or compensated for recommending them. After having London I was looking for good at home work outs to do especially when it came to using free weights. I had heard that the 21 Day Fix was awesome and I figured 21 days sounded pretty reasonable. I also liked that I could stream the work outs. This was important because we don't even have a DVD player anymore (Yes we are that Millennial). The package I signed up for came with a coach who involved me in a facebook group challenge which lasted about a month. I liked that there was community and I wasn't just doing home work outs on my own. This especially came in handy with eating clean and making sure I was fueling my body enough (sometimes momma is the last to eat). During my challenge I got to know Beach Body's new On Demand website more and really enjoyed the Challenge Du Jour which is a curated weekly mix of different work outs from Beach Body's long list of work out programs (you know, the ones you see on all the infomercials). I was surprised to discover that a lot of the instructors are really funny (see Tony Horton, and Shaun T), which helped me get through feeling kind of ridiculous at home. All in all this site is very motivating and helpful and you can get your first 30 days free as well as stream it on your phone through their app, which is perfect for travel!

I found Adriene when I was stuck at home for my work outs when London was too little for the child care at my local gym. I love her yoga videos because she is not only extremely friendly and relatable, she is also very knowledgable. Adriene's down to earth delivery, disarming charm, and "do what feels good" methods made yoga my favorite work out. As my body was recovering from a c-section and my core was in need of a lot of therapy, yoga was a gentle way for me to ease back into my fitness routine. I started with her 30 Day Yoga Challenge and loved that she began gently and added more challenges throughout the 30 days. Most of the videos were around 20 to 30 minutes but some were as brief as 12 minutes, yet you still felt like you did your body good that day. I highly recommend Yoga with Adriene for both beginning and advanced yoga practice, she has a great variety to choose from. Doing Yoga with Adriene is kind of like doing yoga with your best girlfriend.

I discovered Caleb Marshall when this video of Meghan Trainor's song "Me Too" went viral featuring Caleb and his crew dancing it out. He just seemed to be having so much fun and I was missing my fav zumba class at the gym, so I gave it a try. So so addictive. I had tried other zumba you tube channels but they just didn't measure up. I love the trendy latest hits music he chooses, and his choreography is easy to follow but challenging enough to still be interesting. I like that he gives great guidance but doesn't repeat the moves over and over in the slow learning process a lot of dance videos do. I just want to dig in and do the song, not practice the same eight steps over and over. Caleb does a great job rotating a diverse group of dancers including all ages, shapes, sizes and genders so literally anyone can relate and feel comfortable dancing it off at home.

I randomly happpened upon Keaira while scrolling through my other youtube favs. I was interested in her dance work outs and instantly fell in love with her passion and enthusiasm. She does a great job mixing up the type of music she uses and does a lot of isolating movements to work the abs and glutes. She's also a mom so I could relate with what she had to say about getting back in shape and this really encouraged me. She has work outs for all levels so you don't have to feel intimidated getting started, but know that as you learn you can also challenge yourself more. Last but not least, Keaira makes working out fun, and for me that is a priority. I want to be smiling when I'm working out, not miserable and grumpy.

Amy West in Athleta tank

BeFit is another great free resource. Featuring a diverse range of work outs with celebrity trainers. You can do 10 minute abs, dance it off with the above mentioned Keaira LaShae, or experiment with partner yoga plus lots more. I found this channel to be similar to Beach Body with the bonus of being 100% free.

6. Spin
Now that London is over a year old I've returned to the gym where she can go in childcare. I have tried spin before in the past but it wasn't my thing previously. Trying to branch out I decided to give it another try, this time being taught by my favorite instructor (see zumba below). What a difference an instructor can make. My girl Kim rocks it out with a great song list and upbeat motions to keep the hour interesting. It's a challenge to get through, but the best way I've found to start a Monday. After class I always feel ready to take on the world. Definitely look for an instructor that's right for you and make sure to get help setting up your bike the first few times so you avoid injury.

Amy West in trendy work out gear

7. Zumba
Zumba is probably my all time favorite work out. I am extremely picky about instructors though. I'm not really into classic zumba or anything that borders on jazzercise. I want a song list that makes me feel like I'm out with the girls. I take Zumba mid week and it's the ultimate way to escape the weeks stressors and burn a ton of calories. I love that our class sets the lights low and turns on the disco ball. It feels like we are at the club, not the gym and the details are fuzzy in the dim light making me feel like a rock star, not an awkward white girl. I can't live without it. I've been taking classes under Kim for around two years now and she has a faithful following. We feel more like a dance troupe than a work out class. Definitely my favorite.

How to Wear the Military Jacket Two Ways

Military Jacket Two Ways
Fashion is about expressing yourself, and for me that usually leans towards a more classic profile. However, it's fun to mix it up and explore different fashion trends. As I'm transitioning my summer to fall wardrobe I decided to play with the military jacket trend and see how I could integrate it into my favorite feminine looks for the fall.

Amy West in military jacket and bohemian maxi skirt
It's All About Contrast
I love bringing opposites together. To create the perfect contrast take this military jacket which projects a certain amount of toughness, combine with a soft color palette and flowy fabrics, and you'll create a look that's sure to bring the compliments on. This first outfit combines a more bohemian pattern on a light airy maxi skirt that is casually on trend and perfect for travel. This was a great summer look and together with the military jacket and booties, it glides straight into fall.

Where did you get that?
I grabbed most of this look from Le Tote. I know I've been bragging about Le Tote for a while. It's the subscription box full of great trends you can rent or keep. Read more on this blog. Grab your first Le Tote box FREE here. The necklace is from a recent sale at Bauble Bar, and the booties are from Nordstrom (true to size).

Flirt with the Classics
What better way to breathe new life into a classic dress than to pair it with a few trends? My family portrait dress was definitely a worthy purchase that I'll be wearing for seasons to come. Take this timeless piece and top it with the military jacket, over the knee boots, and a cross body bag and it becomes a modern interpretation of individual style that goes straight from day to night.

Where to See the Fall Leaves Change

The best places to take in the fall leavesIf I had to pick a favorite season, fall would win hands down. The cool breeze, the rainbow of color, and the promise of gatherings with family and friends we love. Living in North Florida, we don't get much of the fall season. That's why October is one of our top travel months. Here are a few of my favorite fall destinations to revel in the change of season.

Amy West and sister in law ride bikes in Cades Cove, TN

(Peak Late Oct early Nov)

Cades Cove is one of our family's favorite destinations to marvel in the beauty of the fall season. Take your time driving the 11 mile loop through historic sites, and the magnificent Tennessee countryside. It's not uncommon to spot bear, deer, and other wildlife along the trail. This is a popular drive with lots of traffic during the busy season so give yourself around 2-4 hours to navigate the whole loop.
What to look forward to:

  • View Historical Sites
  • Hike
  • Bike
  • Camp
  • Photography
  • See Wildlife

2. Glacier National Park - Montana
(Peak Late Sept til Mid Oct)

Escape to America's Big Sky Country. Experience the ultimate solitude and be surrounded by nature. Lose yourself in the history, adventure, and wonder of it all. There is no place quite like Montana, go see the glaciers before they disappear.

What to look forward to:
  • 700 miles of trails
  • Mountains
  • Lakes
  • Historic Sites
  • Camping
  • Hiking
  • Boating
  • Biking
  • Cross Country Skiing
  • Natural Hot Springs
  • 25 Glaciers
Fall in the country

3. Freeport  - Maine
(Peak Early to Mid Oct)

Freeport is largely known as one of the best places to shop in Maine. Home to LL Bean, this little town is full of charm and warmth. Take in the leaves, grab a cup of chowder, or score a deal at the outlets. There's plenty to do in this warm little city on the Bay.

What to look forward to:

  • Home to LLBean
  • Outlet Shopping (Best Shopping Town in New England)
  • Lots of Hiking
  • Taste the Chowder
  • Find a Hidden Waterfall
  • Go Apple Picking
  • Go to the Fall Festival
  • Access to the Beach
red wine and dessert

4. Sonoma - California
(Peak Late Sept through Early Nov)

Personally, I think anytime is a good time to go to wine country. However, if you could pick one magic moment to capture and keep in your memory forever, fall would be it. Experience the spirit of harvest, embrace the coolness in the air, and sip on a nice glass of red wine.

What to look forward to:

  • Wine Country
  • Harvest Season
  • Drive the PCH
  • Unwind at the Spa
  • Biking
  • Culinary Attractions
  • Hiking

Amy West and husband join family on the Virginia Creeper Trail
With family on the Virginia Creeper Trail

5. Virginia Creeper Trail - Virginia
(Peak Late Sept through Mid to Late Oct)

The Virginia Creeper Trail has become a sort of family pilgrimage for my husbands side of the family. We do our best to join in this annual trek through stunning rural Virginia countryside. This 34 mile bicycle and horse path is a converted rail trail that stretches from Whitetop, Virginia to Abingdon. Visitors can rent a bike from one of the local bike shops at the base of the trail and they will transport you and the bikes to the head of the trail. Enjoy the mostly downhill ride through the season's kaleidoscope of color. Stop half way at the 3 hour mark, or challenge yourself to the full 6 hour ride. The trail is open year around, but the fall certainly sees a rush of traffic.

What to look forward to:
  • Historical Sites
  • Biking
  • Horseback Riding
  • Hiking
  • Photography
