8 Do's and Don'ts for Traveling With Friends

I've been on quite a few trips with friends and let's just say it can it can be an enlightening experience that changes the course of your life and brings you even closer to your BFFs, or it could potentially crush a relationship. As a professional travel writer I personally think it's a great idea to get away with friends and seek out new adventures together. However, before you go, you might want to keep these Do's and Don'ts in mind for a more successful journey.

1. Do: Communicate Liberally
When it comes to travel with friends, you really can't over communicate. You need to discuss budget, what kind of experience you are seeking, and what your priorities are for the trip just to get started. This is especially important if you live in different places.  

Don't: Be Vague
This isn't a time to worry about feelings. You need to discuss thoroughly so you are all on the same page. I speak from personal experience as a people pleaser, if you fail to speak your mind, no one will be happy. 


2. Do: Share the planning
This is a trip you all share. If only one person does the planning you might not end up getting the experience you hoped for. 

Don't: Assume your friend who likes to plan wants to be a tour guide

3. Do: Be committed
This means you are purpose to be your best for the entirety of the trip from planning to take off and landing. Trust is vital. If your friends can't rely on you, it's going to be a rocky trip.

Don't: Be flaky 
Bailing out at the last minute could ruin the entire trip for everyone involved. Losing your motivation mid trip turns you into extra baggage. No one wants to drag around someone who isn't into the trip.

4. Do: Choose your travel buddy wisely
Well travelled friends may struggle with a novice traveler if they aren't prepared to pace themselves and help their friend learn. Keep in mind your level of travel experience and be realistic about what kind of pace you intend to go with. 

Don't: Overestimate how much your travel buddy knows
 Make sure you are both confident in where you are going and what you are doing. A novice traveler may struggle with more insecurities on how to get around especially if there is a language barrier.

5. Do: Bring a positive attitude and good energy
Don't take things personally or make things personal when you communicate. 

Don't: Be afraid to take time for yourself each day
Find your center and bring your best self to the trip. 

6. Do: Be adventurous
Traveling is all about embracing the unknown and discovering new things. 

Don't: Be afraid to step out of your comfort zone
It's important to know what kind of traveler you are (i.e. being an observer vs a doer) but part of the joy of traveling with friends is embracing your differences and trying things their way.

7. Do: Be Present
You choose to come on this trip with your friend. Try to be mindful and be in the moment.

Don't: Spend all your time on the phone talking to your significant other or announcing every detail on social media. 
Take pics and load them later. Use your private time to communicate with your loved ones at home.

8. Do: Agree on what makes you feel safe
What one person thinks is safe may be frightening to another. Being in a strange place immersed in a new culture can be invigorating for some and set others off balance. 

Don't: Downplay how your friend feels. 
Respect is critical to relationships especially when traveling.

5 Florida Playgrounds for Your Summer Bucket List

With Spring in full bloom and temps slowly creeping up, it's time to look forward to sunshine and summer in just a few short months. Seeking a little inspiration for your itinerary? Here are a few of my favorite Florida getaways you simply must add to your summer bucket list for you and your entire family.

1. St. Augustine

St. Augustine is full of historic charm and a popular attraction for families looking for a fun day trip. Located on the coast you are minutes from sandy beaches, tasty seafood, and spectacular shopping. Featured in the pilot episode of my tv show Like Love Want Need, here are a few of my most noteworthy choices. 

Eat Here - Michael's Tasting Room

Chef Michael Lugo has been influencing St. Augustine's culinary scene since the restaurant opened in 2006. Winner of countless awards including Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence and Best in St. Augustine, you don't want to miss a morsel of this Spanish inspired Tapas restaurant. Taste authentic Spanish flavors in a city settled by the Spanish. A romantic setting often accompanied by live music, this intimate restaurant is a must visit. 

Do This - Castillo De San Marcos

You can't miss this large historic fort as you enter the Old City. Though it may be an obvious choice, you simply can not leave until you've explored the halls of Castillo De San Marcos. Learn about the strategic position of the fortress and why it was so important to the defense of the city. Both children and adults alike will enjoy this remarkable fortification.

2. Fernandina/ Amelia Island


Amelia Island and Fernandina stand out on my list because of their easy accessibility from Jacksonville, and due to the charming coastal vibe. Experience Southern hospitality at it's finest as you explore a city made famous by pirates, and shrimpers. 


Eat Here - Gilbert's Underground Kitchen


Celebrity Chef Kenny Gilbert and his wife have created a foodie favorite in Gilbert's Underground Kitchen. If you are looking for flavorful BBQ with a unique twist, or elevated homestyle cooking made from scratch, then your tastebuds will thank you after visiting this Fernandina Beach gem. Be sure to make reservations at this casual hot spot, you don't want to miss out. 

Do This - Amelia River Cruises

If you want to learn about the areas diverse background from folks who know, the Amelia River Cruises are the best place to start. Enjoy a tour by water of the sparkling coastal area and hear first hand the history of Fernandina. Treasure hunters, pirates, shrimpers, and lighthouse keepers are all a part of the story of this region. Locals with generations of family from the area will regale you with tales of old, and mysteries anew. Get a unique perspective of a historic fort, wild horses, and beautiful marsh. You might even spot a pod of dolphins on this easy going water cruise.

Visit the Vacation Capital of the World 

3. Orlando
Orlando is a Florida favorite. Visitors flock from near and far to enjoy the bountiful amusements it offers. Whether you are there to take in Disney, Universal, Sea World, or one of her other colorful offerings, you won't get bored that's for sure. If you find yourself unsure of where to start, or are looking for a destination that is slightly more off the radar and a bit more relaxed, try this escape on for size. 

Eat Here - Forte Grille

As one of Reunion Resort's onsite dining options, Forte Grille is a restaurant the whole family will love. Serving up a warm and friendly atmosphere with flavors inspired by Tuscany, Forte impresses. Enjoy the extensive wine list and don't forget to leave room for dessert! 

Do This - Waterpark

Reunion Resort also houses several pool scapes, but none so impressive as their very own Waterpark. Float down the lazy river, speed down the slides, and get doused as you run through the giant water playground. Lawn games, tropical music, and plenty of food and drink options make this private park and full day escape. Unwind in style and let the kids go wild.

  4. Tampa

Located on Florida's West Coast, Tampa is a city full of fun and culture. If you are a foodie, then you are going to love Tampa's treasures. Art, music, and adventure all await in this sparkling city on the Bay. 

Eat Here - Elevage

For a taste of Tampa's culinary direction, make a reservation at Elevage located in the Epicurean Hotel. You'll get a taste of regional inspiration, creative technique, and the freshest ingredients. Make sure to grab a cocktail. Their bar scene is on point. 

Do This - Epicurean Theatre

If you have gone out of your way to stay at a foodie hotel, then it's safe to say you probably love food culture. If that's the case then don't leave without experiencing the Epicurean Theatre inside the Epicurean Hotel. Touted as a "Food Channel gone live", you'll sit stadium style while you learn from the best how to create spectacular dishes and what wines or cocktails to pair them with. Truly the icing on the cake when you visit the Epicurean Hotel.

5. Palm Coast

Palm Coast might be easy to overlook as a destination for your bucket list, however you would be missing out big time if you did. This secluded part of the coast features pristine beaches, and ample things to see and do. 

Eat Here - Delfinos

Of all the dining options at Hammock Beach Resort, Delfinos stands out for it's fresh Italian fare. Make sure to order the Scallops, they are a favorite of the regulars. 

Do This - Golf the Ocean Course at Hammock Beach Resort

Of Hammock Beach's two famous courses, the Ocean Course would have to be the most scenic. Florida holds a limited amount of Oceanside courses, and this one is stunning. Enjoy the Ocean breeze, and play this course on repeat, you'll never want the day to end.

IL DESCO | Modern Italian Arrives in Jax

Recently my husband and I were invited to be the guests of one of Jacksonville's newest culinary gems, a restaurant by the name of IL DESCO. Situated in a prime location in one of the River City's most historic and trendy neighborhoods, IL DESCO is poised for success as it aims to please the palates of local connoisseurs, girls night gatherers, and romantic liaisons. Jacksonville's Riverside  area has become well known for it's upscale foodie finds. My review at IL DESCO would reveal if the newest member of the foodie scene was on the same playing field.

The atmosphere at IL DESCO is contemporary and inviting. The open dining area houses large semi private booths, and public dining tables, as well as a long family style dining table made with wood salvaged from another upcoming Forking Amazing Restaurant (The Cowford Chophouse in construction now). I appreciated the tie in as every noteworthy foodie destination usually comes with a story. These little Easter Eggs can be found in many destinations, you just have to know where to look, and who to ask.

The menu is driven by Italian classics including fresh pasta, wood fired pizza, and a raw bar with the freshest local catch. Look for the use of more rustic classics like rabbit, and (one of my absolute favorites) the tastiest polenta you will order in Jax. If you are feeling adventurous go for the Spaghetti Tacos complete with braised short ribs. Tacos are a pretty big deal in Jax, so any creative display is worth a taste.

The Cocktail menu is full of classic and seasonal selections. Look for whiskey, and scotch to make strong appearances, and be open to a few twists on every day favorites. These guys are pros though so you can order pretty much anything and they will deliver, or get creative and let them make something just for you.

After ordering our cocktails we started with bread. I have to say IL DESCO impressed taking their bread game to the next level. This hearty loaf was sourced locally and packed with a full robust flavor. The dipping oil was just as complex and made the bread more than a nibbler, it was pure bliss and truly one of the highlights of the meal. (YOU DO NOT WANT TO SKIP THE BREAD HERE)

Our first selection was a Salmon Crudo DI Mercado off of the Raw Bar menu, and it was marvelous! Perfectly executed and full of well balanced flavor.

My next choice was the Community Board. Creamy and delightful, the grilled ciabatta provided a contrast of crunch to the smooth texture of the grits. I'm pretty sure my husband had to hold me back from licking the jar.

For our main course my husband choose a mouth watering steak, and I chose the special of the day a Lobster Ravioli with just the right amount of spicy kick. The light wasn't quite right for the ravioli, so pictured here you will see their popular Wood-Fired Branzino. The menu at IL DESCO is certainly on  point, however, I will say I always love choosing the special when I can because it's where the chefs get extra creative and I enjoy seeing what their imagination contrives.

The dessert menu was full of great choices you would come to expect of an Italian hot spot, like Tiramisu, Gelato, and Cheesecake. The Apple Jack Whiskey Bread Pudding stuck out as a more creative option (on my list for next time). For this dinner's finale, we opted for the Bombolini aka fancy donuts which are very on trend right now in the food scene. We were not disappointed. Fresh crispy dough, rolled in powdered sugar, dipped in one of your choice of three sauces. A delightful ending to a fantastic evening tasting elevated Italian dishes in one of Jacksonville's trendiest neighborhoods.

IL DESCO is a refreshing addition to Jacksonville's foodie scene, which is generally dominated by more Southern and regional fare. Modern Italian shines on the pedestal Forking Amazing Restaurants have created for this new player on the Bold City's culinary stage.

3 Reasons Quality Time at Home is a Must Have | Featuring Anthropologie

The past six months have been a little slower than my usual. Well... let's define slower. Slower when it comes to jet setting around the world, being in the social limelight, and exploring new luxurious destinations. However, if you define having a baby, getting a kindergartener adjusted to big kid school, buying and moving into a house, and continuing my work on this blog and in the media as slow well... you are probably way out of my league when it comes to busy. It's true my definition of busy has been redefined yet again. It won't be long though, before I pick up my travel pace. In fact, we are headed out to Texas this month to discover all the treasures Houston has in store. I look forward to bringing you the best of Houston, until then I'm embracing these last few refreshing days of spring with my little ones. Here are three reasons I love being home.

1. Routine is the Rhythm of Life
Don't get me wrong. I have come to crave the unknown. I appreciate the beauty of spontaneity, and I love seeking out adventure. However, I find my world begin to shift wildly out of control when there are no boundaries, or rhythm to get into when it comes to every day life. Living out of a suit case can be romantic, but it's not a sustainable way of life. Everyone needs a home base, whether it's a tiny flat, or a 3 story townhouse. Quality time at home allows the space I need to establish the norm, the baseline, or standard I compare the rest of my life to. There is a comfort in routine, and a feeling of security. This is especially important for children. This routine, if established correctly is useful when traveling, but it will never have the coziness it possesses at home.

2. Head in the Clouds, Feet on the Ground
Traveling can feel like a fantasy. Life seems to be full of color, everything is new, and someone cleans your room every day! By nature I'm a dreamer, and when I'm traveling those dreams come alive. When I'm at home things are more humble. I've learned to see the beauty in those humble moments. Without the contrast of these two worlds, it gets easy to take them for granted. The balance of each of these worlds instead makes me a more well rounded individual, living in the moment whether I'm the one being waited on, or doing the cleaning and care taking for my family. It's the embodiment of one of my favorite scriptures. 

"I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want." ~ Philippians 4:12

3. Refresh and Refocus
Sometimes I get restless. I wonder what I'm really accomplishing, or I feel I've completed the challenge I set out to conquer and I crave a new obstacle to overcome. Sometimes, though... it's time to be quiet. Take a break, and quiet my mind. It is in these moments that creativity does it's best work. You can't force an "Aha" moment. You have to be listening. When I'm home and connected to the simple rhythm of life, I hear that little voice that is so easily missed during the times I'm in "the zone" and busy with all my personal goals. This is also the time I take stock of my relationships, and reconnect, repair, and rebuild any that need maintenance. Because, relationships are everything.

There truly is "No place like home", but I do agree that home is where your heart is, and there are infinite pictures of what that image looks like to different people. What does home mean to you? Flying With Kids of All Ages | More Tips and Tricks

Preparing for traveling with kids, a few items you will need

As a professional travel writer and media contributor I get asked all the time about the best tips and tricks for traveling as a family. I wrote about this topic a while ago, but my experience was really limited to preschoolers. Well, by popular request I'm back at it again, this time expanding on tips and tricks for traveling with kids for all ages.

Keep them Comfortable

I'm all about the less is more motto, but when it comes to traveling with kids, a little prep goes a long way. Look for disposable options that will lighten your load along the way! 

  • Have small bags with snacks available
  • Vitamin C lollipops are helpful to avoid the pressure on their ears while not giving them a huge sugar high
  • Pacifier for those who take one
  • For those who don't take a pacifier it's a good idea to feed right after take off and during the plane's decent to avoid painful ear aches due to the cabin's pressure 
  • For long flights across country or continents, ask your pediatrician their thoughts on melatonin - benadryl is not a healthy solution!
  • Noise canceling head phones for infants will help keep them asleep when the pilot starts speaking on the overhead speakers. Avoid the rude awakening and search online for infant sizes. 
Come tech savvy for travel with kids. iPads and headphones are a must

Get Tech Savvy

I think we can all agree that less time spent on mobile devices in the long run is more beneficial to our kids, however when it comes to traveling with the littles, a bit of tech could really save the day. This is one instance you want to be charged up and ready to go.

  • This is the time to bring iPads, and games so charge them up and load games
  • Don't forget to pack head phones, noise canceling are ideal

Practicalities 

Take some advice from those in the know. Fight attendants interviewed agree on these great tips.

  • Don't over hydrate little ones! Kids will need to use the restroom whether it's a good time or not, the last thing you want is a bathroom emergency during a bad session of turbulence, believe me I've been there so limit beverage intake before and after and save the hydrating for once you've landed safely at your destination. 
  • Don't forget to bring along a few empty ziplock bags for dirty diapers and clothes, a common curtesy to those around you when it comes to containing unpleasant fragrances. 
  • Most kids will learn that traveling is a great time to catch some zzzzs so make sure they bring their travel pillow (avoid the germ ridden plane pillows) and let them sleep the trip away

Ideas for Keeping the Kiddos Busy 

Preschoolers
Stimulate their senses


Little tykes are all about tactile stimuli. Think ahead and surprise them along the way.

  • Bring some lavender essential oil along to relax them
  • Surprise them with little present packages hidden away during especially boring moments

Stimulate their Imagination

Air travel is a great time to get grade school kids to tap into their imagination. Here are a few ideas to keep their dreams inspired. 

  • Sketching, or adult coloring books
  • IQ Games
  • Sticker Books are one of my kiddos favs and provide plenty of entertainment

Preteens and Teens
Stimulate their mind

Teens generally think they have seen and done it all. Additionally, it seems sometimes they won't get their noses out of their mobile devices. Stimulate their mind by creating a few games utilizing their sense of observation and helping them open their eyes and mind to the world around them. Joining along with them might just show you a few things as well. 

  • People watching games (i.e. how many people can you find with a mac laptop)
  • Photo scavenger hunt- Have your teen use their cell phone, or step it up a notch with a fun camera like these Fuji Film Instax Mini 8 Instant Film Cameras (bonus: you also get instant momentos from the trip this way)
  • This is a great time to introduce journaling. They can write down what they see and how they feel or sketch pictures of what they see along the way

Whatever your methodology, traveling should be an enriching experience.... let's be real though, it can also be extremely stressful. Here's hoping these great tips will make your journey a raging success.
