10 Things You Must Do on Scrub Island | Scrub Island Resort, Spa, Marina

Recently the man and I met up on a whirlwind trip to the exclusive private island in the BVI (British Virgin Islands). Home of Scrub Island Resort, Spa, and Marina, the island is both intimate and exotic. Luxuriously appointed suites create a village of sorts that flanks the open water and leads to the main pool deck and restaurants. Incorporated in to the design are a Dive Shop, Gift Shop, and a Supplies Shop that doubles as a deli. Private islands are the ideal escape from reality, but beyond R&R, what else do they have to offer? Here are 10 things you Must Do on Scrub Island.

10 Things You Must Do on Scrub Island

 Watch the Video here

1. Grab a Bite
With four different dining options on the island, you certainly don't stand a chance going hungry. What better way to take in the flavor of the region than by grabbing a bite to eat? You could grab a sandwich at the Gourmet Market and Cafe and make it a picnic on the beach, or sit down for open air dining at Tierra! Tierra! overlooking the pool and sea. Enjoy fine dining offerings at Caravela, or get casual at One Shoe  Beach Bar & Grill. Whatever your mood or pace, enjoy exceptionally fresh fare at Scrub Island Resort.

2. Retreat to the Spa
Situated in a private Villa overlooking the ocean, Ixora Spa by L'OCCITANE is zen-like retreat. The perfect way to begin any trip, unwind during a couples massage, facial or one of their customized packages designed to meet your needs. Honored as a "Top 10 Spa" in Caribbean Travel and Life, Ixora has mastered the art of melting away your stress and rejuvenating the spirit.

3. Snorkel
Discover a magical world full of colorful creations under the surface of the water. Rent a snorkel kit for a nominal fee at the dive shop and lose yourself in hours of exploration beneath the azure waves.

4. Island Hop - Chartered Excursions
Take in the history of the BVI, catch that Big Fish, or soak up the sun from the deck of a catamaran all on one of the Chartered Excursions available from Scrub Island. Ask for details when you make your reservation and plan for a day at sea you'll never forget.

5. Take a Dip in the Pool
The pool at Scrub Island is a multilevel masterpiece complete with infinity terrace and a slide. Enjoy some relaxation in the hot tub or see how fast you can jet down the slide, all while enjoying the iconic Caribbean seascape.

6. Offshore Sailing School
Always wanted to learn the craft of sailing? Sign up for Steve and Doris Colgate's Offshore Sailing School and experience the freedom for yourself. For over 50 years the Offshore Sailing School has been teaching adventurers of all levels to improve their skills. Check it off your bucket list or add extra skills to your roster.

7. Honeymooner's Beach
A private island with a private beach? Yes please! For sun and sand and complete privacy head to Scrub's private stretch of beach. Snorkel, catch some rays, or just hang. It's your call for the few hours you call this "best kept secret" your own.

8. Go for a Walk
Scrub is small enough to take in during a brisk walk in an hour or so. Get a 360 degree view of the majesty of the Caribbean and enjoy the romantic sunrise or sunset. Get a jog in or make it a relaxing stroll, whichever you decide, you'll be inspired by what you find.

9. Go Shopping and Score some Swag
Take home a reminder of your epic getaway with some swag from Scrub's gift shop. There is something inside for the whole family and the perfect souvenir for those waiting for you back home.

10. Jump Off the Dock
Do something spontaneous and maybe a little bit crazy. Get a running start and seize the day in this rite of passage on the island. Jump off the dock for a memorable experience everyone "must do" when at Scrub.

All this and so much more, from kayaking to scuba diving can be yours when you visit this outstanding resort. Get out there, say yes! Go experience all there is.

Until then...

Enjoy the Journey!

Outstanding Lighting Displays on the First Coast | Amy West on The Chat

There is nothing quite like slowing down during the busy Holiday season and taking a moment with the family to enjoy the celebrated tradition of Christmas lights. Jacksonville is a huge city and sometimes it's easy to stick close to home and tour what's nearby. There are so many great displays all over the city, however, and these are some you should really go out of your way to see. So do like our family does and cozy up in your favorite warm pajamas, grab some blankets and hot cocoa and make a night out of it at these festive locations.

Discussing Holiday Light Festivities with the Ladies of The Chat

In Town

The World Class Jacksonville Zoo puts on a show worth stopping for during Zoo Lights with thousands of LED lights that transform the  Zoo and Gardens into a winter wonderland. You'll see moving sculptures, lighted trees and animal designs, and forests of brightly lit trees. Zoo Lights opens at 6:30 pm December 12-14, 18 - Jan 3rd (closed Christmas Day). It's $8.00 admission for members and $10.00 for non-members. Purchase online for extra savings and for extras like warm weather skating, the train, and carousel

Tip- The Zoo recommends taking the train to the back of the park and walking your way to the front. Make sure to stop for S'mores on the lawn!

Drive through almost a mile of Christmas Lights synchronized to your favorite holiday music you can tune into right on your radio. Jax Illuminations has over 500,000 lights and takes around 8 weeks just to build! The team at Jax Illuminations works hard year around to create this one of a kind magical experience. Kids will love hearing Frozen's "Let it Go" while watching the massive lighting display dance to the beat.
Jax Illuminations is located at the Morocco Shrine Center 3800 St Johns Bluff Rd S,  Jacksonville, FL 32224. M-TH $20.00 per car and $25.00 on the weekend.
Tip- Jax Illuminations provides hot cocoa and candy canes to all who enter.
Blackhawk Bluff Neighborhood
Several years ago this neighborhood adopted a unique method of decorating with lights by stringing them up vertically in the giant trees surrounding each home. The effect is something like a magical rainforest or jungle. Add to that shining stars that seem to float through the air along with Santa's sleigh slipping it's way from house to house and you get an experience like no other. In all the places I've traveled I've yet to happen on a display that scales a neighborhood this large. It's worth a visit but be patient, it's a popular place to be during the holidays.

Beaches

Ocean Walk Neighborhood
Visit the ornate display at 402 Snapping Turtle Drive E., Atlantic Beach in the Ocean Walk neighborhood. Two houses unite to create one stunning display complete with  well choreographed and lengthy musical numbers the lights are synced to. The owners consider this a community out reach, a way to give back and enjoy chatting up visitors and passing out holiday candy to guests both young and old. In a conversation with the owner I learned it can take up to six hours to sync one minute of music to the lights. Now that's dedication!

Tip- The owners respectfully ask that you park at the top of the cul-de-sac and walk down out of consideration of their neighbors.

Jacksonville Beaches annual Deck the Chairs display is a perfect way to celebrate the holidays at the beach. Take a walk around the pavilion and explore the dozens of Life Guard Chairs decked out to the nines. Each chair is sponsored by a local business and illustrates the diversity of the beaches community. All proceeds from sponsored chairs, ornaments, and raffles benefit the historic American Redcross Volunteer Life Saving Corps.

Penman/Seagate Homes
At the corner of Penman and Seagate are several houses in a row who go all out in their Christmas displays with hundreds of lights, animatronics, blow up displays and holiday music. You'll enjoy the gator themes, and looking out for Santa who pops up here and there along the way.

St Augustine

You simply cannot talk Christmas Lights in the area without mentioning St. Augustines Famous Night of Lights. Voted one of the 10 best displays in the world, St. Augustine celebrates in style. Thousands of white lights decorate the city highlighting ancient architecture and the beautiful Southern Live Oaks. Take a trolley around the city or go by foot and enjoy all the city has to offer on a romantic holiday night out.

Have any "Best Kept Secret" lighting displays near you?  What about favorite family traditions? Tell me about them in the comments below!
Until then...
Enjoy the Journey!

3 Reasons to Adventure to Scrub Island BVI | Travel Review

Looking for an adventure to remember? Have distinctive tastes that seek luxurious accommodations,  top rated chefs, and exquisite service? Then you have to hear all about my recent trip to Scrub Island, a private island in the British Virgin Islands. Scrub Island is home to Scrub Island Resort, Spa, and Marina a truly distinguished jewel in the sparkling waters of the Caribbean. The adventure is in the journey there as this destination is off the beaten path. After a flight through San Juan, Puerto Rico and a Cessna flight with Cape Air to the Island of Tortola, my husband and I hopped on the resort's ferry for a short trip to the exclusive island. Our stay there, was like something from a novel romantic, exotic, and full of memorable moments.

A few of Virgin Gorda from our Cessna flight out
1. An Ocean View for Every Guest

As you step onto the island you are transported to a private oasis. Reminders of the romance of a Hemingway novel shine through in an understated elegance that weaves a story throughout the design concept. Luxury and opulence come to mind as you make yourself at home in one of the 52 ocean view guest rooms and suites. Want to set up house for long term visits? Full kitchen's are available for personal meal time prep as well as private balconies for you to enjoy the tropical warmth and sea side sunsets. King sized beds keep you resting in luxury with Egyptian cotton sheets and down bedding.

Our suite was pleasantly quiet with plenty of privacy and an epic view of the ocean and surrounding islands. It was roomy and bright with contrasting dark wood and warm tropical accents and the bathroom and closets were a room unto themselves with separate tub and shower. A large sitting area opened up to the kitchen and dining space with ample room to relax and unwind.

2. Lose Yourself on Island Time

You might be tempted to think a private island would be limited in activities, but not so on Scrub Island. From bathing in the aqua waters to getting sporty on kayaks and paddle boards there is plenty to keep you busy. Scrub is big enough to hike the island's circumference and get a great view of the surrounding area while taking in the scope of the resort's footprint.  Seeking a little family time? Enjoy the multilevel pool including an infinity level and a slide, or rent some snorkel gear at the dive shop for an up close look at the underwater wonderland of the BVI

I discovered a new love for snorkeling during my first time observing the rainbow of activity happening under the surface. I could have easily spent hours discovering new species I'd never before seen outside of an aquarium or television screen. When we were ready for some solitude we decided to get lost on Honeymoon beach, a secluded stretch of sand safe from prying eyes with just the sun, sky, and salt water to keep us company.
Feel at home at Ixora Spa housed in one of Scrub's private Villa's.
Seeking some rejuvenation, a trip to Ixora Spa by L'Occitane was in order for a couples massage. The spa was exceptionally private housed in one of Scrub Island Resort's Villas atop a rising hill. Luxurious L'Occitane products soothed the soul as any tension remaining melted away at this peaceful retreat.

3. Feed the Senses

When you look back on  your travels, you want to conjure up pictures in your mind of the glittering sapphire sea, the feel of the sand between your toes, and the smell of the salt air. Rounding out your impression of a destination is the sense of taste, and great taste you will find at each of the four dining options available on Scrub. From Caravela's fine dining atmosphere serving up elevated continental classics to the ultimate casual spot on the island One Shoe Beach Bar and Grill dishing out cocktails and light fare, the resort caters to every taste bud. Taste for yourself the distinct flavor profile of each spot like Tierra! Tierra!'s Carribbean influences, or keep it laid back by heading over to the Gourmet Market and Cafe where you can stock up your in room kitchen and grab a few sandwiches for a picnic on the beach. Enjoy the flavorful journey and commit each creation to memory because taste is an epic part of Scrub's identity and completes the experience at this iconic destination.

Find adventure and luxury at Scrub Island Resort, Spa, and Marina in the British Virgin Islands. It's truly one of a kind. A magical place you'll return to as often as possible.

Until then...

Enjoy the Journey!

As an added bonus, however, AmaWaterways is keeping AmaSonata in port and affording travelers the unique opportunity to ring in the New Year in Amsterdam with a free two-night stay!

There’s also another great option for those that want to celebrate the arrival of 2015 in Vienna. This 7-night Christmas on the Danube departs from Vilshofen, Germany on the 27th aboard the AmaBella.

Europe’s top hotels can cost as much as 700% more over the New Year’s holiday.  The chance to enjoy New Year’s from the comforts of the new AmaSonata – which was christened July 2014 and features luxurious accommodations combined with unparalleled service – represents an incredible value.  Whether cruisers choose to book the full 14-night journey or one of the 7-night sailings, wrapping with a free two-night extension in Amsterdam or spending New Year’s Eve in Vienna is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that won’t break the bank.

Cruises start at $1959

6. Expedia

Solmar resorts in Cabo, up to 50% off plus a 20% spa discount at some resorts.

Keystone Lodge in Breckenridge, CO is up to 40% off.

Here are some general and holiday-specific tips for saving from the experts at Expedia:

    • Expand your search to neighboring airports. On one of Expedia’s most popular routes for Christmas in 2013 (LA to NYC), the average ticket price from LAX to JFK was $565, but for the LAX to LGA route, the average ticket price was $492. And LGA is miles closer to Manhattan than JFK.
    • Mix and match travel dates. For Christmas, a high number of people are looking to travel on December 21, which is one of the most expensive days to travel. While traveling on Christmas Day itself will yield terrific deals, this is impractical for many people who are not Santa Claus. Traveling on December 23-24 may yield lower fares.
    • Bundle. Book airfare and hotel as a package and save up to $540.

Safe travels. Seize the day and find your next great adventure.

Until next time...

Enjoy the Journey!
